How the Australia take-home pay calculator works
Australia taxes residents on a simple marginal scale with a $18,200 tax-free threshold. The calculator follows the same steps the Australian Taxation Office uses:
- Step 1: it subtracts the $1,000 instant work-related deduction from your salary (you can switch it off) to get your taxable income.
- Step 2: it applies the FY 2026–27 resident tax rates: 0% to $18,200, then 16%, 30%, 37% and 45% on the slices above.
- Step 3: it adds the 2% Medicare levy on your taxable income, with the low-income shade-in so small earners pay less or nothing.
- Step 4: it shows your take-home pay annually, monthly, fortnightly and weekly, plus your superannuation separately.
- Step 5: it reports your effective and marginal tax rates, so you can see what a raise or bonus would really net you.
FY 2026–27 resident income tax rates
The table below shows the resident tax scale the calculator uses for the 2026–27 financial year (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). Tax is marginal: each rate applies only to the slice of income inside that band.
| Taxable income | Tax rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $18,200 | 0% (tax-free) |
| $18,201 to $45,000 | 16% |
| $45,001 to $135,000 | 30% |
| $135,001 to $190,000 | 37% |
| Over $190,000 | 45% |
The 2% Medicare levy
On top of income tax, most residents pay the Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income, which helps fund Australia’s public health system. Low-income earners get relief: no levy is payable below the annual threshold (about $27,222 for singles), and a shade-in rate of 10% of the excess applies just above it, so the levy phases in gently instead of hitting all at once. The calculator applies this shade-in automatically.
Superannuation: 12% on top of your pay
Superannuation is not deducted from your take-home pay. Your employer must pay an extra 12% of your ordinary earnings into your super fund on top of your salary — so a $90,000 salary comes with $10,800 a year going into super. The calculator shows this figure separately so you can see your total package. Because super is taxed at 15% inside the fund (for most earners), it is one of the most tax-effective ways to save for retirement.
The $1,000 instant work-related deduction
For 2026–27, employees can claim an instant $1,000 deduction for work-related expenses without receipts or a logbook — covering things like home-office costs, tools and professional memberships. The calculator applies it by default, which saves a typical middle-income earner around $300 in tax. If you have larger deductible expenses, your actual taxable income (and tax) will be lower than shown, so treat the result as a conservative estimate.
Worked example: $90,000 salary in FY 2026–27
Say you earn $90,000 and claim the $1,000 instant deduction:
- Taxable income: $90,000 − $1,000 = $89,000
- Income tax: 16% of $26,800 ($18,201–$45,000) = $4,288, plus 30% of $44,000 ($45,001–$89,000) = $13,200 → $17,488
- Medicare levy: 2% of $89,000 = $1,780
- Total tax: $17,488 + $1,780 = $19,268
- Take-home pay: $90,000 − $19,268 = $70,732 a year
- Monthly: $5,894.33 · Fortnightly: $2,720.46 · Effective rate: 21.4%
- Superannuation: 12% of $90,000 = $10,800 paid by your employer on top
Australia take-home pay FAQs
What are the Australian income tax rates for 2026–27?
For residents in FY 2026–27: 0% on the first $18,200, 16% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. The 2% Medicare levy applies on top of these rates.
What is the Medicare levy and who pays it?
The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income and funds Australia’s public health system. Most residents pay it, but low-income earners below about $27,222 pay nothing, with a gradual shade-in just above the threshold.
How does the $1,000 instant deduction work?
From 2026–27, employees can claim a flat $1,000 deduction for work-related expenses without receipts. It directly reduces your taxable income, saving a middle-income earner roughly $300 in tax. You can switch it off in the calculator if it does not apply to you.
Is superannuation taken out of my take-home pay?
No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by your employer on top of your salary into your super fund — it never passes through your pay packet. That is why the calculator shows it separately rather than deducting it.
Does the calculator include HECS or HELP repayments?
No. Compulsory HELP/HECS repayments are withheld through the tax system on top of income tax once your income passes the repayment threshold. If you have a study debt, your actual take-home pay will be lower than shown.
What is the tax-free threshold in Australia?
Australian residents pay no income tax on the first $18,200 they earn each financial year. This threshold is built into the PAYG withholding tables, so it is already reflected in what hits your bank account each pay cycle.
