Working extra hours should mean extra pay — but how much extra? Our free overtime pay calculator turns your hourly rate and weekly hours into precise overtime earnings in seconds. Enter your regular hours plus any time-and-a-half (1.5×) and double-time (2×) hours to see your total weekly pay, annual pay and your true effective hourly rate.
How the overtime pay calculator works
The calculator splits your week into three pay bands and adds them up:
- Step 1: it multiplies your hourly rate by your regular hours for your base weekly pay.
- Step 2: it multiplies your rate by 1.5 and then by your time-and-a-half hours.
- Step 3: it doubles your rate and multiplies by your double-time hours.
- Step 4: it totals the three bands for your weekly pay and multiplies by your weeks worked for the annual figure.
- Step 5: it divides total weekly pay by total hours worked for your effective hourly rate — the single number that captures what each hour is really worth.
Overtime rules: time-and-a-half and double-time
In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires non-exempt employees to be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states go further: California requires double-time (2×) for hours over 12 in a day and for all hours on the seventh consecutive workday. The UK has no statutory overtime rate — it depends on your contract — while Australia typically uses penalty rates of 1.5× for the first hours and 2× after that under most awards. Enter whatever combination matches your situation; the calculator does the maths either way.
Who qualifies for overtime?
Not everyone is entitled to overtime. In the US, “exempt” employees — generally salaried workers in executive, administrative or professional roles earning above the salary threshold — are not covered by FLSA overtime rules, though many employers pay it anyway. Hourly and non-exempt salaried workers are covered. Not sure whether you are entitled to overtime at all? Read our full guide to US overtime rules in 2026. If you are unsure, check your contract or your country’s labour rules; the calculator itself works for anyone paid by the hour, entitled or not.
Why your effective hourly rate matters
Your effective hourly rate is your total weekly pay divided by every hour you worked, regular and overtime combined. It is the fairest way to compare jobs: a $25/hour role with 7 overtime hours (effective rate $27.39) can beat a $27/hour role with no overtime. If a new job offers a higher base rate but fewer hours, compare the effective rates — not just the headline numbers.
Worked example: $25/hour with 7 overtime hours
Say you earn $25 an hour, work 40 regular hours, 5 hours at time-and-a-half and 2 hours at double-time, for 52 weeks:
- Regular pay: 40 × $25.00 = $1,000.00
- Overtime at 1.5×: 5 × $37.50 = $187.50
- Overtime at 2×: 2 × $50.00 = $100.00
- Total weekly pay: $1,000.00 + $187.50 + $100.00 = $1,287.50
- Annual pay: $1,287.50 × 52 = $66,950.00
- Effective hourly rate: $1,287.50 ÷ 47 hours = $27.39

Overtime pay FAQs
How is overtime pay calculated?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by the overtime multiplier (1.5 for time-and-a-half, 2 for double-time), then by the number of overtime hours. Add that to your regular pay. For example, 5 hours at 1.5× on a $25 rate is 5 × $37.50 = $187.50.
What is time-and-a-half?
Time-and-a-half means 1.5 times your normal hourly rate. In the US it is the legal minimum overtime rate for non-exempt employees working more than 40 hours a week. On a $20 hourly rate, time-and-a-half is $30 an hour.
When is double-time paid?
Double-time (2× your rate) is required in California for hours over 12 in a single day and for all hours on the seventh consecutive workday. Elsewhere it is usually a matter of contract, union agreement or company policy rather than law.
Is overtime pay taxed more?
Overtime is taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, but a bigger paycheque can push that week’s withholding into a higher bracket, making it look heavily taxed. It evens out when you file your return — you are not penalised for earning overtime.
What is an effective hourly rate?
Your effective hourly rate is total pay divided by total hours worked, blending regular and overtime rates into one number. It is the best way to compare the real value of jobs with different hours and overtime patterns.
Do salaried employees get overtime?
It depends on whether you are classified as exempt or non-exempt. Non-exempt salaried workers are entitled to overtime in the US; exempt workers generally are not, though employers may offer it. Divide your weekly salary by your usual hours to get an hourly equivalent, then use this calculator.
