Standard etiquette is to tip on the pre-tax amount.

Dining out with friends and the bill arrives – who owes what? Our free tip calculator works out the tip, adds sales tax and splits the bill fairly in seconds. Choose a preset tip percentage or enter a custom one, decide whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount, and see exactly what each person pays.

How the tip calculator works

Five quick steps:

  • Step 1: Enter the bill subtotal before tax and tip.
  • Step 2: Add the sales tax percentage if applicable (leave at 0 if none).
  • Step 3: Pick a tip percentage preset or type a custom one.
  • Step 4: Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  • Step 5: Choose pre-tax or post-tax tipping, then hit Calculate.

You will see the tip amount, the total bill and each person’s share, plus a donut chart breaking down bill, tax and tip.

Tipping etiquette around the world

What counts as a good tip depends on where you are:

  • United States: 15-20% at restaurants, with 18-20% the norm for good service. Tip bartenders $1-2 per drink.
  • Canada: Similar to the US, 15-20% is standard.
  • UK: 10-15% if service is not included; check the bill first.
  • Europe: Often included as service charge; 5-10% extra for exceptional service.
  • Australia/Japan: Tipping is not expected and can even cause confusion.

Dining abroad? Run the bill through our currency converter first so you know the real total in your own currency.

Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Standard etiquette in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. On a $100 bill with 8% tax and 20% tip, pre-tax tipping gives $20.00 while post-tax gives $21.60 – a $1.60 difference. This calculator lets you choose either method.

Splitting the bill fairly

Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the whole total – bill, tax and tip – into equal shares. For groups where someone ordered significantly more, work out their share separately, but for most meals an even split keeps things simple.

Tip calculator FAQs

Traditionally you tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total gives the server a little extra – the difference is small on a single meal.

How do I split a bill between 4 people?

Add the bill, tax and tip together, then divide by 4. This calculator does it automatically – just enter 4 in the number of people field.

What is a good tip for delivery?

For food delivery, 15-20% of the order subtotal is standard, with a $3-5 minimum. Tip more in bad weather or for large orders.
